CIRM stands for “Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca Matematica”, which may be translated to “International Center for Mathematical Research". The scientific scope of CIRM is promoting and supporting international research in Mathematics, through the organization and co-funding of conferences, workshops, scientific events as well as several research-in-pairs programs.

It is a laboratory established in 1979, that is financially supported jointly by three institutions via an agreement that is renewed every three years. These institutions are:
CIRM is committed to hosting groups of scholars, including prominent senior academics as well as promising young researchers, while also securing diverse groups of participants of the events. While being a relatively small center, CIRM has attracted an average of 430 international mathematical researchers per year in the last 45 years.
